Time signatures tell you how many beats there are per bar, what value note is being used as the beat, and how the main beat is subdivided into smaller beats. Many people don't realise that last point! In order to understand the difference between 3/2, 6/4 and 12/8 you need to understand the difference between duple, triple and quadruple time, and between simple and compound time. The way the main beat is divided (which is always into 2 or into 3), is reflected in the ways notes are grouped together - with beams, with ties, and also with the choice of values for rests, for example. In the grade 5 theory exam, your knowledge of time signatures is tested in several ways. Apart from putting a time signature into a few bars with the time signature missing, you'll probably also have to add missing rests, add missing barlines, rewrite a rhythm without changing the rhythmic effect and answer general knowledge questions about the technical words to describe time signatures. On top of that, you'll be expected to use the correct notation (including beaming, ties and rests etc.) in the composition question. Time signature dependent questions crop up throughout the grade five music theory exam, so make sure you are confident you know how they work!
