This video is suitable for students taking the ABRSM grade 5 music theory exam and includes an intervals exercise. This is the easy way to understand intervals! Intervals Explained Intervals have a number (e.g. 3rd) and a quality (e.g. perfect). To work out an interval, first you need to know the major scale built from the lower note of the two. If the interval exists in the major scale, it will be perfect (for unisons, 4th, 5th and octaves) or major (for 2nds, 3rds, 6ths and 7ths). If the interval isn't found in the major scale built from the lower note, it could be augmented, minor or diminished. If the interval is bigger than an octave, it's a compound interval. Compound intervals also need to be described as major, minor, perfect, augmented or diminished. If the lower note of the interval is too tricky to build a major scale from, shift both notes up or down by the same amount, without changing the letter names, until the lower note becomes one you can build a scale from easily.
