The format is for two high pitched instruments (such as violins, flutes or oboes) with a third bass instrument, such as the cello. In addition, a harpsichord (or similar) provided an accompaniment, improvised from the figured bass (basso continuo) written underneath the bass part. A large number of Trio Sonatas were written in the contrapuntal style.
