Scales for ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory Candidates Brought to you by Victoria Williams from http://www.mymusictheory.com This video shows you how to work out the 4 kinds of scales which are tested in the ABRSM grade 5 music theory exam. The scales you need to know are: major, minor harmonic, minor melodic, and chromatic. And you need to know them in all key signatures up toe six sharps or flats. That means you need to know these keys: C major / A minor G major / E minor D major / B minor A major / F# minor E major / C# minor B major / G# minor F major / D# minor F major / D minor Bb major / G minor Eb major / C minor Ab major / F minor Db major / Bb minor Gb major / Eb minor Scales are just patterns of tone (whole steps) and semitones (half steps). You need to make sure that the correct pattern of tones and semitones is used in your scale. For major and minor scales, you also need to make sure that you use each note letter name only once per octave (except the first and last note, which will be the same, of course). Because of this, you'll sometimes need to use notes like E# instead of F natural, for example, and you'll sometimes need to use double sharps as well. You can find a more detailed lesson (plus free online exercises) about scales at: http://www.mymusictheory.com/learn-mu... and we also have a complete list of scales for your reference at: http://www.mymusictheory.com/learn-mu...
